Pocket Watch

I found my old pocket watch today,
Rediscovered its timeless charm.
My love decided to go away,
Gone with a spectral hand on my arm.

I can wind up this watch anytime,
Control its hands as I will, and
The same is true of you – cross the line.
You tell me nothing with your hand.

I clutch its shining gold lustre,
Things such as these never desert.
Arguments we had; so much bluster,
In the end no meaning, just hurt.

Here I am among my possessions,
Lamenting the truths that cannot
Be denied. Will we learn the lesson?
That love and lovers can be too hot.

I can wind this watch for all my days,
Acquiring goods to fill the space,
Distracting me from thinking up ways
To win you back, to kiss your face.

  1. Hi again, just dropping in for a nosey. I liked this, felt the emotion in it quite a lot. Makes it a good poem (or a morbid reader?!)

Keep going, I'm impressed with the quality of your poems and your regular postings. Thanks for inspiring me to finish something else soon!

  2. Hi Mavis, I wrote this on the calm of a damp Welsh mountain last weekend. It's not for me to say whether a poem is good or bad but I know when I'm satisfied that one has formed well and it's very rare that I can take a look at a poem half a day later and not make any changes - but this one met both those criteria.

Thanks for your continued support and I'm glad I could give you a little inspiration!

  3. I love the concept of this poem...I love the comparison here between the pocket watch with it's timeless charm, and lost love. It has such wonderful imagery. I can see why it is one of your favourites! Beautiful writing! :-)

  4. I enjoyed reading this poem and experiencing the emotion you share. I particularly liked the line "Will we learn the lesson?
That love and lovers can be too hot." as It is a truth denied for many. Thank you for sharing.
